Consensus
Without Meetings
How to decide together without dying in a room
most meetings are a decision that could have been a document. here's how to move without them.
The Protocol · 5 steps
1
Write the proposal down
a clear written proposal beats an hour of talking. people react better to text they can sit with.
2
Default to consent, not consensus
don't ask βdoes everyone love it?β ask βcan anyone not live with it?β that ships decisions.
3
Set a decide-by date
silence past the deadline is a yes. open-ended equals never.
4
Name a driver
one person owns the call. groups advise; individuals decide. accountability lives in a name.
5
Make it reversible
most decisions are doors you can walk back through. bias toward action, fix later.
Run it: take one stuck group decision. write it as a one-paragraph proposal with a decide-by date. post it.
“a decision that could be a doc should never be a meeting.”
TL;DR write it β consent not consensus β deadline β a driver β reversible
